USC Canada helps farmers in Africa, Asia and Latin America grow more food for their families, in ways that are kind to the environment and that nurture biodiversity. We were founded in 1945 by Dr Lotta Hitschmanova, one of Canada's most beloved humanitarian leaders.

Why Run for Biodiversity?

On May 22, USC joins millions of people around the world in celebrating International Biodiversity Day. Biodiversity is all about food and farmers. It's the earth's life-support system, and nature's brilliant insurance policy against disaster. If something fails, there's a back-up plan: Biodiversity! Much is at stake and in a real sense USC is helping farmers plant the Seeds of our very Survival.

Where will donations go?

All donations for the 2012 Run for Biodiversity-Calgary will help finance USC's work in Nepal. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to support the community-based agricultural, biodiversity and environmental initiatives of our local partner, the Self-Help Initiatives Program, SHIP.

SHIP is working in extremely challenging conditions, helping farming families to survive and thrive in the remote Himalayan district of Humla, a 20-day's walk to the nearest road.
