Scotiabank Calgary Marathon Welcomes New Sustainability Sponsor
Total E&P Canada Teams Up to “Green” Canada’s Longest Running Marathon
Calgary, Alberta – The race is on to reduce the carbon footprint of the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon. Total E&P Canada (Total) has stepped up to the podium to become the Official Sustainability Sponsor of the Calgary Marathon Race Weekend. Total is committing to reduce the event’s impact on the environment, refine current green practices, and integrate new initiatives to create a sustainable annual event for the whole family. “Total is proud to become the first Official Sustainability Sponsor for the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon. Each action we take as individuals, however big or small, helps us collectively. Sustainability is an important part of our everyday lives, particularly with health & wellness activities, including running,” says Leo Piciacchia, an avid runner and Total E&P Canada’s Vice President of Sustainable Development, Health, Safety & Environment. This is a welcome addition according to Dan Ouimet, Chair, Calgary Marathon Society. “Total is coming to the table with some fantastic ideas and we are excited about integrating green components into the Calgary Marathon. The future lies in an ongoing enjoyment of sport and recreation while also taking steps towards a healthy and sustainable environment,” says Ouimet.
The Total Sustainability sponsorship will fund the following:
-
Ensure recycling of cups along the route
-
Recycle and compost bins at the Health & Wellness Expo and at Stampede Park on race day
-
A team of “Total Race Recyclers” who will be hot on the trail of runners picking up discarded bottles, wrappers, and waste
-
Repurposed metal medals for participants and recycling any remaining medals after the event
-
Eco-friendly, compostable plates and cutlery for the post-event pancake breakfast
-
The Total "I Race Green" Pledge & Challenge
Total believes it will take the cooperation of all the participants to make this year’s race sustainable. “At Total our employees champion a “Green Attitude” and we believe this team culture and personal action is achievable by everyone,” says Piciacchia.
